A Spring Beauty Refresh

fern-about-town-spring-beauty - master

A few Sundays ago, I was passing through one of my favourite neighbourhoods in South Ken and, to my surprise, spotted the first of this year’s cherry blossom buds, just beginning to turn a rosy shade of pink. Despite the wintry London weather, it was a little signal that spring is just around the corner…

The promise of blossoms and fresh blooms of a new season inspired a little rummage through my make up kit to create a look that embodied all things spring. Think sheer, dewy products, with that little touch of blossom bud pink…

The secret to fresh-faced make up starts from the skincare used to prep the skin and this Elemis Superfood moisturiser gives a little boost for a dewy complexion. Packed with ingredients like avocado, ginger, and matcha, it’s the green juice antioxidant shot that post-winter skin craves.

If I’m not in a hurry, I usually like to allow a few minutes for the product to sink in before moving on to make up…

This looks works best when the texture of the skin is still visible, so for foundation I’ve used NARS Sheer Glow; a build-able foundation that gives skin a natural-looking luminosity.

I’ve kept the rest of the face very simple with a flush of colour on the cheeks from my Hourglass Ambient Lighting palette. The Hourglass signature look is a natural, glow-from-within one and the blushes combine colour with a touch of shimmer, too. Apply just to the apples of the cheeks and sweep up and out to blend.

[N.B. This was a Limited Edition collection, but the Ambient Lighting individual blush (try the shade Ethereal Glow) is a similar alternative.]

For brows, I would normally use a brush and powder bwhich achieves a stronger brow whereas I want the brows here to look like a slightly more defined version of how they would naturally. I really like Benefit’s Gimme Brow for this, brushing the brow-sized wand through the natural arch of the brow to create soft definition and, crucially, texture.

For lips, I want to complement the glowiness (let’s add that one to the dictionary) achieved for the rest of the face with… a gloss. Before you recoil in horror (!), lip glosses have come a long way since the fruity, hair-tangling, glitter formulas of the 00’s. To keep this look grown-up, I’d opt for a colour close to the natural pigmentation of your own lips. Clinique’s Lip Lacquer in Cocoa Pop is a perfect shade for my skintone and a sheer swipe of this makes the whole look more youthful. A little dab of lipstick underneath will deepen the shade if you feel a gloss on it’s own is too sheer for you, and also ensure the colour has a bit more lasting power. An everyday nude for me is Bobbi Brown’s lipstick in Sandwash Pink, which veers on the dark beige side of the nude spectrum. It’s also rumoured to be the bridal shade of choice for Kate Middleton (what better endorsement than a royal one!).

Eyes I’ve kept simple. I want the lashes to be the hero here so there’s no liner, but lots of mascara and a sweep of eyeshadow. Lancôme’s Grandiôse mascara adds drama to lashes and can be built up for a full, doe-eyed effect. The eyeshadow is a barely-there shimmer from Bobbi Brown that blends out to give a subtle illusion of depth.

For a final touch, a spritz of Diptique’s limited edition Eau Rose hair mist. These are a new product discovery for me and a subtle alternative to an eau de parfum, but I love catching the floral, fresh scent of this one through the day.

And that’s it! A simple, spring make-up refresh.

Do you change up your make-up with the seasons?
